Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that is formed by the nerves of L4, L5 and the first 3 sacral nerves that travels down the back of the leg.
Pain from this nerve is called Sciatica and it is defined as pain affecting the back, hip, and outer side of the leg, which is caused by the compression of one of the above nerves.

Symptoms Include

  • Severe “electric shock” pain down the back of the leg
  • Pain in buttock/ thigh
  • Pain on bending forward
  • Difficulty standing straight
  • Difficulty getting comfortable while sitting

Causes

  • Disc bulges
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle spasm
  • Trauma
  • Spondylolisthesis ( a malformed bone slips forward)
